AMD announced on Wednesday that it intends to invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic while also helping the AI company scale up its computing resources. Under the agreement, Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 accelerators, using the chipmaker's new Helios rack-scale system.

The two sides plan to bring the first gigawatt of capacity online in the first half of 2027. The deal continues Anthropic's string of infrastructure arrangements: the company had previously struck data center agreements with SpaceX and TeraWulf, and signed AI infrastructure contracts with Google, Broadcom, and Amazon. Rumor has it that Meta may be added to that list as well.

Engineering collaboration

Beyond supplying hardware, AMD and Anthropic are launching a “multi-year engineering collaboration.” As part of it, AMD will use Claude in its own software development, engineering tasks, and product creation.

“By working with AMD across every layer of the stack, we're securing the capacity we need and optimizing it for training and serving Claude,” said Tom Brown, co-founder and chief compute officer of Anthropic.

The agreement reflects the intensifying race for computing resources among developers of large language models: access to GPUs and data center power is becoming an asset no less valuable than the algorithms themselves.
