The company frames the change as a “permanent 25% increase in limits,” but compared with today, users will get less.

Anthropic has announced changes to the weekly usage limits for Claude Code across the Pro, Max, Team, and per-seat enterprise plans. The wording sounds appealing: starting September 14, the company is “permanently” raising standard weekly limits by 25%. In reality, though, for existing subscribers it will amount to a cut.

Arithmetic instead of marketing

Right now Claude Code has a temporary 50% boost to its limits, which will remain in place until September 14. If we take the baseline weekly volume as 100 units, then today a user has 150. As of September 14, that figure will drop to 125.

In other words, the limit really will end up 25% higher than it was before the promotion — but roughly 17% lower than it is right now. The slick framing almost creates a sense of gain, even though it's actually a reduction.

Anthropic acknowledged the cut

The company deleted its original thread on X and posted a clarification openly admitting the substance of the change: “Compared to today, this amounts to a 17% reduction in Claude Code's weekly limits.” At the same time, Anthropic promised “exciting changes” meant to create the feeling that you're getting more out of Claude, and to give users more transparency and control over how they spend resources.

The company points out that actual consumption depends on many factors — the length of the conversation, the model chosen, tool usage, and the level of “effort” — so the weekly limit does not translate into a fixed number of requests.

The temporary 50% boost remains available through September 13 inclusive, and the new permanent limits take effect on September 14.
