Anthropic has announced yet another postponement of the date after which the Claude Fable 5 model will no longer be available to users on paid Claude Max plans. According to developer Simon Willison, the company has extended access to Fable 5 and also kept the 50%-higher weekly limits for Claude Code — now until July 19.

As before, users will be able to spend up to half of their weekly usage limit on Fable 5. Once that quota is used up, access to the model can be continued through additional credits, or you can switch to a different model to stay within the remaining limit.

Anthropic initially attributed such restrictions to a shortage of compute: the company needed a more accurate read on demand and the availability of computing resources before it could guarantee subscribers steady, low-cost access to the new model.

The occasion for this latest postponement is the release of GPT-5.6 Sol, an OpenAI model that, in Willison's view, clearly belongs to the same class as Fable/Mythos. OpenAI, however, appears to have no such doubts about the availability of its own model. The company's representative, Thibault, reported on changes to Codex and ChatGPT Work over the past 48 hours: the five-hour usage limit for the Plus, Business, and Pro plans has been temporarily lifted, changes are being rolled out to make GPT-5.6 Sol run more efficiently and consume fewer limits, and usage limits have been reset. In addition, OpenAI announced that it had reached the mark of 6 million active users.

Willison believes Anthropic should change its approach and make Fable access under these plans permanent, since the uncertainty surrounding the model's availability plays into its competitor's hands and encourages users to move over to OpenAI.
