Anthropic has abandoned plans to remove the Claude Fable 5 model from its subscription tiers and will keep it available to Max and Team Premium users. The decision is tied to competition from GPT-5.6 Sol and Kimi 3.

Anthropic has announced that its Claude Fable 5 model will remain available under its subscription plans, rather than becoming exclusively accessible through API pricing as previously planned. The news was shared by the @claudeai account on Twitter.

Starting July 20, Claude Fable 5 will be included in all Max and Team Premium plans, capped at 50% of the usual usage limits. Users on the Pro and Team Standard plans will retain access to Fable through a usage-credit system and will additionally receive a one-time credit of $100.

According to commentator Simon Willison, Anthropic's original plan to pull Fable 5 from its subscription tiers proved unworkable because of competition — chiefly from the GPT-5.6 Sol model, and, to a lesser extent, Kimi 3. A subscription costing $100 or $200 a month makes no sense if it doesn't include access to the company's best model.

The initial decision to restrict access was driven by concerns over a shortage of computing power. Willison suggests that Anthropic may be forced to scale back the training of new models in order to free up more GPUs for serving Fable 5 within its subscriptions.

Many users, it is noted, were worried about the impending access restriction and were trying to make the most of the model's capabilities before the changes took effect. That need has now gone away.
