System76 has released COSMIC Epoch 1.11, the newest point release of its open-source desktop environment. Written in Rust, COSMIC is the flagship desktop for the company's own Pop!_OS Linux distribution.

Dialogs and the compositor

The headline change in 1.11 is support for the Wayland xdg-dialog-v1 protocol, which improves how modal dialog windows are presented. Alongside it, the COSMIC compositor receives a number of bug fixes.

The right GPU for games

The release pays special attention to hybrid-graphics systems that carry more than one video accelerator. The COSMIC app library now ensures that the correct GPU is used for video games, and the same logic has been added to the pop-launcher code, which likewise makes sure the right accelerator is picked on hybrid setups.

Other fixes

Version 1.11 also brings many translation updates, fixes scrollbar padding in libcosmic, and adds MIME type association for JSON files in the COSMIC text editor, among other smaller fixes.

COSMIC Epoch 1.11 is available for download, with more details, via GitHub.
