Translated by a model; the original is in Russian.
Ubuntu 26.10 shipped this month, and work on the next version of the distribution, Ubuntu 27.04, has now formally begun. The opening of the development cycle was announced on the ubuntu-devel mailing list.
The new release carries the codename "Tenacious T-Rex." The T-Rex repository is already open, and automatic syncing from Debian will be switched on soon, bringing a large number of new packages into the distribution.
Release schedule
The Ubuntu 27.04 timeline is as follows:
- 25 February — feature freeze;
- 18 March — UI freeze;
- 29 March — beta freeze;
- 1 April — beta release;
- 22 April — official release.
What to expect
Ubuntu 27.04 is expected to continue moving system and infrastructure components to Rust. Among other things, ntpd-rs, a Rust implementation of the time synchronization service, is planned as the default.
Canonical is also resuming development of Ubuntu Core Desktop, the immutable flavor of the desktop system. Further work on AI features for the desktop is expected as well.
