OpenAI is building “o,” an always-on ChatGPT assistant that may handle email

OpenAI appears to be testing a new always-on assistant with the terse name “o.” The company hasn't confirmed or denied the plans, but traces of the upcoming feature briefly slipped onto its own website.
What users spotted
As users on X noticed, the line “o, your always-on assistant” briefly appeared among the perks of the $100 ChatGPT Pro plan. It sat alongside more Work and Codex usage, maximum memory, 100GB of file storage, and early access to new features.
A dynamic configuration also contained an entry reading display_name: "o" next to email_suffix: "-o". That hints the assistant could eventually gain some form of email identity or the ability to handle mail. For an always-on helper the logic is clear: it should keep working on your tasks even when you're not actively using ChatGPT. Exactly what OpenAI has in mind remains unknown.
Details likely at DevDay
OpenAI has already confirmed it will host DevDay 2026 in San Francisco on September 29, promising new features, technical sessions, and demos. The article's author wouldn't be surprised to hear more about “o” there.
Leaks have also mentioned an internal system called “Aeon,” built around custom agents for ChatGPT workspaces, but “o” looks like a separate, consumer-facing experience.
