OpenAI has released GPT-6.1 Terra, a model built for everyday work: operating a computer, visual reasoning, coding and writing. The pitch centers on pairing speed with low cost while keeping accuracy high.

Terra is meant to absorb drudgery — filling out forms, editing videos, interpreting technical drawings and automating repetitive desktop tasks. OpenAI describes it as a "fast, efficient" model that blends detailed visual reasoning, precise computer use and a clearer, more natural writing style.

Cheaper and faster

Terra's API pricing is 50% lower than that of GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol: one dollar per million input tokens and five dollars per million output tokens. On Agents' Last Exam at medium reasoning effort, Terra scored 15 percentage points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra while costing about a third as much.

According to OpenAI, the model performs on par with GPT-6 Astra at one-tenth the price per token, and completes tasks more than three times faster than both GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.

Fewer errors

Reliability improved as well. On an internal benchmark, the error rate at low reasoning effort dropped from 53.6% with GPT-5.6 Terra to 16.7% with the new model. At maximum effort it fell to 4.3% — nearly matching GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.

Coding gains are visible too: on Terminal-Bench 4.0 at maximum reasoning effort, Terra scored 50.3% against its predecessor's 21.5%, more than doubling the result. Even so, OpenAI still recommends GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Astra for the most complex coding work.

The model is available now to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex, and through the API as gpt-6.1-terra.
