The OpenShot project has released version 4.0 — it was flagged on GitHub as a new major release of the open-source non-linear video editor. It is this release, rather than yet another interim build, that justifies the jump in numbering from 3.5.1 straight to 4.0.

Moving to Qt6

The main change, and the reason for bumping the version number, is the switch to the current Qt6 graphics toolkit. The editor was ported from Qt5, which required a considerable amount of code changes. Along the way, the developers also set about improving the interface: a recording mode and a separate panel for audio recording have appeared, as well as a timeline preview when recording from several sources at once in real time.

New Effects and AI Models

The update also brought a set of features tied to machine learning. Among the new additions are ComfyUI templates for noise suppression, cleanup, restoration and voice enhancement in audio. New shadow and glow effects, a separate Analysis View mode, and film-grain presets for clips have been added.

The object detection filter has been reworked separately: a YOLOv5 setting and a choice of YOLO model have appeared. The packages for Microsoft Windows have been improved as well.

The source code and prebuilt OpenShot 4.0.0 builds for various platforms are available on GitHub.
