openSUSE Leap 16.1 Reaches Release Candidate With New Immutable Mode
Translated by a model; the original is in Russian.
The openSUSE project has moved the upcoming Leap 16.1 into its release candidate phase. The distribution is being developed in step with the commercial SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 16.1, with which Leap shares a common base.
The most notable addition in 16.1 is support for a new immutable system mode. In such configurations the root filesystem is protected from arbitrary changes and updates are applied atomically — an approach that has gained ground across the Linux world in recent years as a way to make systems more reliable and predictable.
Reaching the release candidate stage signals that the core feature work is done and the team is now focused on ironing out remaining bugs ahead of the final release. Keeping pace with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 16.1 preserves Leap's familiar tie to SUSE's enterprise platform.
