Google has finally announced the first wave of laptops under its new Googlebook brand. The opening lineup consists of five models — from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo. Preorders start today, and the machines arrive in stores on October 4th. Prices begin between $899 and $1,299, placing the Googlebooks squarely alongside the MacBook Air and a wide range of Windows laptops.

Every Googlebook ships with 12 months of Google AI Pro and 5TB of cloud storage, plus three-month trials of YouTube Premium, Adobe Photoshop and CapCut. Google is also promising up to ten years of updates.

The five models

Acer Googlebook 14 is the only 2-in-1 convertible in the first batch, echoing the Chromebook Plus Spin 714. Acer claims up to 16 hours of battery life, and its $899 starting price is the lowest here. That may not last, though: an Acer representative called it an "initial launch price available for a limited time," warning that RAM and component shortages could push it up. Inside are an Intel Core Ultra 5 or 7, 16GB of RAM and a 14-inch 2.8K OLED screen.

Asus Googlebook 14 borrows the ExpertBook Ultra's look, with a gray-blue metallic chassis and more ports than most rivals, including HDMI. It's the lightest of the five at 1.0kg, but starts at $1,299. Its display is a 3K OLED.

Dell XPS Googlebook costs $1,199 and closely resembles the XPS 13, though in a gold "shimmer" finish with Google's glowbar. Unlike the Windows version it adds a fingerprint reader, but sticks to just two USB-C ports. It runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite.

HP Googlebook 14 at $1,299 offers both facial recognition and a fingerprint reader, plus the highest storage option so far — up to 1TB. Its dark blue chassis recalls the HP Spectre, but ports are sparse: two USB-C and a headphone jack.

Lenovo Googlebook 15 also starts at $1,299, but boasts the largest display at 15.3 inches. It's the only one in a white, satin-finish chassis. Lenovo is launching an "AI mouse" alongside it, with a matching glowbar.
