Troy Hunt, the creator of the Have I Been Pwned (HIBP) service, has announced another addition to the list of government users of his platform. Nepal has become the 47th government to be onboarded to HIBP's free government program.

The National Cyber Security Centre of Nepal (NCSC) can now monitor the country's government domains against the HIBP database. This allows the agency to identify compromised accounts among government email addresses and respond promptly when those accounts surface in new data breaches.

Why the program was created

According to Hunt, this is exactly what the HIBP government service was designed for: to help national cybersecurity teams strengthen their threat monitoring and incident response. The agencies gain insight into which credentials and accounts within their domain space have been compromised.

Nepal has joined a growing list of governments and national teams that use HIBP to better understand the scale of their own exposure, protect government institutions and public resources, and reduce the risks associated with compromised credentials — before malicious actors can take advantage of them.

The service is provided to governments free of charge and remains one of the most notable examples of a private information security project taking on the role of an infrastructure tool for entire countries.
