OpenAI has shut down its Atlas browser, but its Chrome extension now gains the ability to work with tabs you already have open and control them from the sidebar.

OpenAI's ChatGPT Atlas browser is gone, but the company's Google Chrome extension has picked up an upgrade that lets it make use of the tabs you already have open.

According to OpenAI, with the extension installed ChatGPT can now view the contents of your tabs when you tag Chrome in the chatbot's web or desktop app. A demo video shows a user asking ChatGPT to compare the sofas they have open across three tabs.

What it can do

OpenAI lists several sample queries. You can ask it to fill out a registration form using the details from an event brief — and stop before submitting. You can pull vendors from several tabs into a comparison sheet, complete with pricing, key features, and source links. You can compare contractor services from all your open tabs and draft an email to the one best suited to your home renovation. And ahead of a visit to a new dentist, it can fill out the form you have open and add the appointment to your work and personal calendars.

The ChatGPT panel in Chrome has also been refreshed: it now offers "the full power of ChatGPT" along with your entire conversation history from Chat or Work, without leaving the page you're viewing. The ChatGPT Work mode gains the ability to "control" your tabs — sending messages, filling out forms, downloading files, as well as organizing and grouping open tabs. The result is meant to resemble Google's Gemini-powered "auto browse" feature.

In short, OpenAI has abandoned the idea of a standalone browser but is trying to graft the same capabilities straight into Chrome — right where most users already have far too many tabs open.
