Tim Cook Steps Down as Apple CEO: A “Product Builder” Takes the Helm

August 31 was Tim Cook's last day in the Apple CEO's chair. In a farewell letter to employees, he stressed that he was “not leaving Apple,” only stepping away from the role of CEO, and spoke warmly of his successor, John Ternus, senior vice president of hardware engineering. “Few people understand what it takes to create world-changing products the way John does,” Cook wrote.
The choice of Ternus hints at what Apple's next chapter will look like: an emphasis on hardware and execution. Ternus has led engineering teams across the company's entire device lineup and was behind a string of notable releases — the ultra-thin iPhone Air, the more affordable MacBook Neo, and AirPods with hearing-health features. In TechCrunch's assessment, hardware is becoming ever more important in the AI era — not just chips, but the devices that corporate AI solutions run on. Tellingly, Apple released its new Mac mini and Mac Studio earlier than usual this year, spurred by demand from AI.
What Cook left unsaid
The letter, reported by Bloomberg and other outlets, says almost nothing about the challenges ahead — artificial intelligence, services, regulation, relations with China. Instead, Cook thanks employees and extols the company's corporate culture as its greatest asset. “We share a belief that what we make matters, and that we have the opportunity and the responsibility to leave the world better than we found it,” he writes, recalling Steve Jobs's famous line about Apple leaving a “dent in the universe.”
Even so, Cook is not leaving for good: he stays on at the company as executive chairman of the board and will continue to handle political relationships, including with the administration of President Trump and with the Chinese authorities.
On the social network X, Cook added a more personal note: “Sending lots of love to the Apple community on my last day as CEO. Tomorrow my title will change, but my love for the Apple community never will.” He thanked his colleagues for being “a constant source of inspiration” and admitted that he is looking forward with excitement to “the next chapter.”
