iXsystems has put out TrueNAS 27 RC.1, the first release candidate for the next major version of its Linux-based network-attached storage operating system. The stable TrueNAS 27.0 release is slated for December.

Why jump to 27

The version numbering has its own backstory. The release was originally meant to be called TrueNAS 26, but the developers decided to skip straight to 27. The reasoning is straightforward: most users will end up running the system in 2027 rather than 2026. To make the number reflect when it will actually be deployed at scale rather than when it debuted, the release was tagged 27.

What's inside

TrueNAS 27 is built on the Linux 6.18 LTS kernel and bundles the OpenZFS 2.4 file system. Beyond refreshing the core OS components, it adds a batch of new features: TrueSearch and WebShare for improved server-side searching, Fusion Pools 2.0, stateful SMB fail-over support, and early access to the TrueNAS Object Interface for native S3 access to ZFS datasets.

Betting on performance

The move to the Linux 6.18 LTS kernel and OpenZFS 2.4 is meant to deliver noticeably greater performance than prior releases. The OpenZFS update brings additional AVX2 optimizations, the new kernel promises better performance and broader hardware support, and a variety of other improvements round things out.
