Valve has released an experimental build called Holo Core — an Arch Linux–based version for the AArch64 architecture that will serve as the foundation for the software platform of the Steam Frame headset.

Development is being carried out together with Collabora, a company that has long collaborated with Valve on projects related to Linux and the graphics stack. The Steam Frame is a headset announced by Valve and powered by a Qualcomm processor, which requires a full-fledged Arch Linux build adapted to the ARM64 architecture.

The materials published today include the source code and ready-made binary packages of Holo Core. This is the first publicly available version of the base system that Valve intends to use as the software platform for the new headset.

The appearance of Holo Core confirms that Valve is continuing to develop its own Linux ecosystem — previously tried out in SteamOS for the Steam Deck — now adapting it to the ARM architecture and to the demands of VR/AR devices.
