QEMU 11.1 has been released — the latest edition of the emulator and one of the key components of the open virtualization stack. As Phoronix notes, no single feature in the new version stands out particularly brightly, but taken together the improvements add up to quite a lot.

Support for the UFS 4.1 Specification

One notable area of work was the emulation of UFS storage devices. QEMU 11.1 adds support for UFS Write Booster based on the UFS 4.1 specification — a mechanism that speeds up write operations. From that same UFS 4.1 also comes the emulation of the Host Initiated Defragmentation (HID) feature, that is, defragmentation initiated by the host.

RISC-V and Arm Architectures

QEMU 11.1 gained support for new RISC-V extensions, including Zvfbfa, and also acquired support for RISC-V in big endian mode. For the Arm platform, support was added for a whole range of new architectural capabilities of the processors.

Other Changes

Beyond this, the new code also improves the operation of other subsystems, brings refinements to the graphical interface, and adds numerous enhancements to user-mode emulation.

A detailed list of changes is available on the QEMU project wiki, and the builds themselves on QEMU.org.
